The Learner's Library: Musical Instruments

Screen Shots

Main Menu

The main menu provides access to the main reference section, the activities section and the teacher options.  From any part of the program you can access the scrapbook and glossary.

Finding Information

There are three ways of searching for information in the Learner's Library - By a menu, an index or search facility.  All these buttons can be hidden by the teacher if required.

Browse Menu

The instrument menu subdivides all the instruments included into families.  The user simply clicks on a family to find see which instruments are in that family.

Browsing Instruments

From within the Percussion Instruments menu, the user can choose to view in-depth information on any particular instrument simply by clicking on it.

Information Pages

The user has chosen to look at the cabasa.  Along with a colour photo, they can scroll through several pages of information, all of which is spoken.  Clicking on the blue sound button lets the user listen to a short clip of that instrument playing.

Index

The instrument index provides a list of every instrument used throughout the program.  A picture of each is displayed by the side and the user simply clicks an entry to find out about it.

Search Facility

The search facility allows the user to type in the name of an instrument of feature to provide a list of matches.  An additional feature (which can be disabled by the teacher), stills attempts a search even if the user makes a spelling mistake.

Glossary

Available form most parts of the program, the glossary provides a spoken list of every difficult word used.

Activities Menu

The instrument activities menu provides easy access to the three activities.  This whole section can of course be disabled by the teacher if required.

Counting instruments

The user is shown a selection of instruments and is invited to count how many are on-screen.

Odd one out

The user is challenged to spot the instrument that is the odd one out.

Find the instrument

Can the user find a given instrument?  The easier level of this game also shows a picture prompt.

Scrapbook

The scrapbook makes it easy for the user to record their findings or produce a page on a given topic.  Text and graphics can be inserted on to the page, which can then be printed or saved for later use.

Teacher Settings

The teacher options page can be password protected and allows control over sound, volume, which buttons/sections of the program are available, printing, start level, word highlighting and game levels.
